Return of the King
This year Batman began, but next summer Superman Returns. Total Film goes on set with Brandon Routh, Kate Bosworth and Bryan Singer as they prepare the new Supes for lift-off…
Words Jeff Jensen Portrait James White

Here in the golden age of the superhero flick, there has been no shortage of princes. Spider-Man. Batman. X-Men. Yet all are mere pretenders to a long-vacant throne. Next summer, Warner Bros gives us the return of the king – otherwise known as Superman Returns. We’ve met the Man of Steel. We’ve seen him fly. And while it’s too early to tell whether the film truly soars, there is little doubt that Brandon Routh is worthy of the royal red cape.

Is Routh (pronounced like mouth) prepared for his life to change forever? “I have no idea. But I am prepared to be prepared,” laughs the actor, relaxing in the grassy plaza outside the Daily Planet set after a long afternoon of being hoisted up and down I his Superman suit. Routh, from the tiny town of Norwalk in Iowa (population: 6,000), is both affable and confident, despite his relative inexperience (he did a year on US daytime soap One Life to Live). “I was always dead-set on casting an unknown,” says director Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects, X-Men). “Brandon embodied the character the best – his acting talent, physical presence and personality.”

“I’m ready for this,” says Kate Bosworth, making the leap to leading lady after notable supporting roles in Blue Crush and Win a Date with Tad Hamilton! “I’m just glad my ‘breakout’ wasn’t a gigantic film. I feel solid in myself now.”

Singer cast Bosworth after watching her performance as Sandra Dee in Beyond the Sea, the Bobby Darin biopic directed by the new Lex Luthor, Kevin Spacey. “I saw it twice and fell for her,” says Singer. To test his potential stars, the director used one of the film’s most emotionally charged scenes, in which Superman and Lois reunite atop the Daily Planet building after five years apart: “The chemistry was palpable.”

“I watched a lot of Katherine Hepburn to prepare for Lois, particularly The Philadelphia Story and Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner,” says Bosworth, who is said to have edged out Claire Danes for the role, which has her sporting brown hair instead of her usual blonde locks. “Hepburn is a great model for how I see Lois – strong but fragile.”

Singer and Routh met for the first time at the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf café on Sunset Boulevard in LA the morning the director left for Australia to begin pre-production. “I knew I would know within 30 seconds if it was a no-go,” says Singer, who found the tall, athletically built Routh sitting at a table. “He stood up – and up and up and up! I said, ‘Okay…’” Drinks were ordered. An awkward moment of fumbling for napkins suggested Routh could do goof-bumbly Clark Kent comedy. Singer left for Sydney knowing, “I had my Superman. And I think he knew it too.”

Clark Kent comes easy to Routh. “Or so my family and friends say. I do tend to be clumsy,” he explains. (The real-life black-framed eyeglasses are the clincher.) But to bring Superman to life, Routh south counsel from a movement coach to nail the character’s subtleties. “We worked on posture. Spine straight, hips forward, neck in line – just a clean motion moving through the world.” There have been additional benefits. “I slouch less,” he laughs.

Superman’s Metropolis isn’t’ the Big Apple. While the Reeve Superman films used New York as their Metropolis, a peek within the film’s art department reveals a gleaming neo-Deco city that will be built mostly out of pixels. Mixing vintage and modern elements, Singer hopes to make a movie that’s timeless. “I want to make a movie that in the future, someone can pop in a disc – or a crystal or something – and not go, ‘Wow! This must have been really interesting back in the early ‘00s!’”

The new suit is tight, and cool, a nifty riff on the ‘40s Max Fleischer cartoon/’30s Joe Shuster-drawn Supes. Insanely detailed, too: the S on Superman’s chest is composed of hundreds of tiny diamond-encrusted S-shapes that no one will ever see. Nifty. But tight. “Very confining,” says Routh. On days when he’s wearing the flight harness underneath, it’s a real pain in the arse. And back. Thighs and hips, too. “But once you get past that – which is sometimes hard – it’s also very empowering,” says Routh. “First time I put it on, I felt… stronger. Like a different level of who I am. It makes playing the character that much easier.” (In case of emergency, yes, there is a zipper in the shorts.)

Superman Returns should have been Superman III. While technically not a sequel, Singer’s film picks up five years after the events of Superman II (Consider Superman III and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace forgotten.) “It puts the first two films in a vague sense of history,” says Singer, who’s respect for the first Superman films is such, he sought out director Richard Donner’s blessing before taking the job and relaunching the franchise (Donner had shot some 70 percent of the second installment before being ousted in favour of Richard Lester). He even plans to incorporate unused footage of Marlon Brando’s performance o Jor-El, Superman’s Kryptonian daddy. His movie opens with Superman spiritually lost – and in space. His inevitable return to Earth elicits surprising reactions, especially from his old flame and a certain bald enemy. “It’s a story about what happens when messiahs come back and how we embrace them – or not,” says Singer. “On a personal level, it’s a story about what happens when old boyfriends come back into your life.”

Of course, it could have been so very different. King of slackers Kevin Smith was originally charged with relaunching Superman into a bright new sky, after Warner Bros execs were apparently bowled over by the scene in Mallrats in which Brodie and TS discuss the Man of Steele’s ability to reproduce (“Only someone like Wonder Woman has a strong enough uterus to carry his kid”). Smith’s plot saw Superman team up with The Eradicator (essentially a T-1000 with a bit more personality) to battle Lex Luthor, Brainiac and Doomsday. Lois Lane, meanwhile, is trying to decide whether to settle down with the red-panted wonder now that she knows his true identity. Set years after Superman IV, Smith described it as “Superman 90s style,” our hero even considering going to Burger King for dinner. It was eventually canned: funny as it was, it was Superman written by a geek for geeks.

Singer’s version is sure to have a wider appeal and is set to be the summer hit of 2006. Of course, it helps that Batman Begins and Spider-Man 1 and 2 have paved the way. Smith’s version would have come hot on the Day-Glo heels of Batman and Robin...
